Employees abandon 78% enterprise mobile apps after using them just once. (SAP, 2014)
Our team did extensive research on this and narrowed down the number of possible reasons to 5.
1. “User-unfriendly” interface design
Forrester’s research in 2014 revealed an alarming figure – 64% employees rarely use enterprise apps due to poor user experience. Enterprise web apps have been known to have industrial look-and-feel but have been accepted by most users as there has been sufficient digital real estate to lay out the meaningful content as well. Mobile interface, with its limited real estate, just HAS to have good design for adaptability.
2. Not big on data security
A 2015 IBM study on security highlighted that nearly 40% of large corporations, including many Fortune 500 companies, do not have the necessary precautions required to prevent security breaches in customer apps.
Choosing role-based security instead of unsecured API access and partnering with mobile security providers is what helps overcome security holes in apps. WS recommends (and is partnered with) MobileIron and Good to be part of the development tool kit.
3. Development runway is not enough
An enterprise app usually takes 9 months to design, develop and deploy. Development costs can touch the $250k mark and even cross it depending on the functionalities. Any cost cutting done here reflects on the finished product, as design issues, bugs and so on. Stakeholders should factor in this time and not look at agencies to deliver the solution ‘yesterday’!
4. Difficulty in hiring qualified developers/agency
A recent survey by Vision Mobile found that only 20% of app developers globally work with enterprises. Reason? The compensations as well as stakes are higher for commercial apps! It is normal for enterprises to work exclusively with app development companies that focus on enterprise apps in order to overcome this talent shortfall.
5. Getting users to buy-in
Like consumer apps, enterprise apps also need to get the target audience to buy-in or download the app and use it. Stakeholders should focus on training, benefit-sharing and incentivizing the use of enterprise apps in order to gain critical mass of users internally as well. Great design, usability, solving a pain point and sharing enough information about the app are the starting points to onboard users.
Enterprise apps tend to sort some key issues as well as enhance productivity. Reliance on established organizations like WS is likely to help alleviate the issues as discussed above. #shamelessplugin!
