Critical Vulnerability in Adobe’s Flash And Acrobat

Monday, June 7th, 2010

The mainstream 10.0 editions of Flash can yield to critical vulnerability which is being exploited in by hackers according to Adobe. The 9.x editions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat which incorporate 10.0 Flash compatibility are also vulnerable.

The 10.1 generation of Flash, is not affected by this vulnerability. Users can download the 10.1 beta from Adobe which is also built into current versions of Google’s Chrome browser. The 8.x generation of Acrobat is unaffected.

Adobe calls this a critical vulnerability and claimed it could cause a crash and allow the attacker to take control of the system in the context of the user running the affected product.

Reader and Acrobat 9.x users can mitigate the vulnerability by deleting, renaming or denying access to the authplay component which, on Windows, is typically located at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\authplay.dll for Adobe Reader or C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\authplay.dll for Acrobat. After this change users who open a PDF with SWF content will experience a non-exploitable crash. Adobe is still working on a schedule for patches for the affected products.

Transition from Flex Builder 3 to Flash Builder 4

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

There may be various approaches to use Flash Builder 4 with your existing Flex 3 projects. The approaches can vary depending on the Flex SDK features you need and the kind of migration that you are ready to undergo.

The transition from Flex 3 apps (developed using Flex Builder 3) to Flash Builder 4 does not require migration of the app to use Flex 4 SDK. This gives you the liberty to avail the benefits of the features of Flash Builder 4 right away on the existing project.

Some features of Flash Builder 4 features comprise a network monitor, enhanced debugging, refactoring support, code editing improvements, unit testing support, data-centric development (DCD) workflow and more.

  3. Updates code hinting for new attributes and values in existing HTML tags.

Flash Builder 4: A Cool Upgrade to Flex Builder 3

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Flash Builder 4 has been recently introduced to Adobe Creative Suite for the release of CS5. It is primarily a program designed to create interfaces that gather data (via forms) and present data (through views) from server databases.

Flash Builder 4 was formerly known as Flex Builder which was quite similar to Flash Professional. The closest CS5 relative of Flash Builder is Dreamweaver as they share a number of similarities in procedural definitions and binding server databases. Basically Flash Builder 4 is an upgrade to Flex Builder 3.

Flex framework is a popular open source platform that generates either MXML format or ActionScript 3.0 code. Though it is technically possible to code Flex applications with a free SDK, it could be quite difficult to execute a Flex coding project without Flash Builder. This is because Flash Builder offers useful tools like automatic testing, debugging hints and syntax hints for quality code development.

Android App Development Gets Easier With Slider Framework for Flex 4

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

A recent study showed that Android has overtaken Apple to claim the top spot as smartphone providers in the U.S. Interestingly, Adobe is venturing into the mobile market and is focusing on developing apps for Android devices. With the rapid expansion of the mobile market, developers need to focus on developing apps and delivering them for the mobile platform. While they can develop apps using Flash Professional or Flash Builder (Flex) on PC’s and run them with a browser through Flash Player or through the Adobe Air packager, a similar platform is not available for mobile devices. Adobe has come up with solutions to these problems.

The new Slider Framework for Flex 4 will enable easier development of Android apps for the mobile platform. It aims to solve all related problems of mobile development including performance levels, input methods, and the multitude of screen resolutions, interfaces, and operating systems. Delivery will not be much of a problem once Adobe AIR for Android and BlackBerry is released. AIR is being extended to smartphones and will enable the delivery of the same application across many platforms.

iPad Fuels the Flex vs. Ajax Conflict

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The launch of the iPad has spurred an old debate – Which is better, Ajax or Flex. The fact that iPad does not support Flash has not only stirred the dormant argument, but also brought up questions about the future of RIA technology.

Both the technologies are essentially different with a distinct set of strengths and weaknesses. Experts suggest that Apple’s decision has nothing to do with the merit of any technology in particular.

About Flex: Back in 2004, Adobe launched Flex software development kit to create Rich Internet Applications. Adobe’s Flex is a framework that lets a programmer compile an XML based ActionScript into a Flash SWT file. Adobe’s Flash is a widely accepted tool for refreshing websites, appending features like animation and games. However, Flash requires the browser to install the Flash plug-in. This can slow down your system and use more resources than using the native browser JavaScript support.

About AJAX: AJAX is a methodology for producing RIAs. It is normally used on top of web pages to add functionalities like pop ups and shadow boxes, and smart features like drag-and-drop. AJAX is definitely more popular due to its search engine friendly attribute and no Plug-in requirement.
